Why Is Everyone Talking About Agentic AI Now?

agentic ai

In a world where technology evolves faster than our ability to name it, we often mistake repackaging for revolution. Every few years, a new buzzword emerges, capturing our collective imagination and making us believe we have stumbled upon something entirely unprecedented.

Yet…sometimes the most transformative technologies have quietly been operating around us all along, waiting not for invention but for acceptance. This is a story about one such technology and a very frustrated observer.

The Buzzword

Tibi was really annoyed after dropping off a couple of passengers at their corporate office. He was tempted to call it a day and go home. Generally, he loved listening to all types of conversations.

But today the topic really frustrated him, and his driving was not smooth. His turns in particular had been jerky, and the driving score today showed “3-star”! He had never seen a rating below 4+, and most were 5.

He had three rides in which his passengers spoke nothing but about Agentic AI

It was not the topic that annoyed him. It was just that they were talking about it as if it were something new. Something that was just discovered! Grow up, people, Tibi thought.

A Hospital Conversation

While he was deep in his thoughts, another ride had already been scheduled. The next ride was to a hospital, and the drop-off was closer to his home. He decided to do one more ride.

At the hospital, a doctor and a nurse got into the cab. Tibi, as usual, muttered, “Good evening and welcome!” But instead of his usual warm voice, he sounded curt and robotic.

The doctor spoke to the nurse, “So, how was the conference on Agentic AI?” Tibi almost stopped the cab; there was a noticeable jerk, and he saw his driving score dip.

He ignored the driving score and thought, “Here we go again… Was there some sort of filter today that picked passengers interested in this particular topic?”

The nurse responded, “It was pretty cool. But I don’t understand what the hype is all about.” The doctor responded, “What! It is the buzzword everywhere. It can run things autonomously. On top of it, learn, improve, and optimize.” Tibi thought, “I like the nurse! At last, someone with some sense.”

Agentic AI Isn’t Actually New?

The nurse said, “Yes. But the opportunities to create an autonomous workflow have already been there for some time. I think humans weren’t ready for it. Maybe generative AI, like the AI assistant, has opened a small window showing us that we are ready for autonomous machines. Or maybe we are becoming increasingly lazy!”

The doctor laughed and said, “I am not a techie. You come from a technology background, so you know better. By the way, what are some of the things they demoed at the conference?”

A Conference Demo

“Well, they demoed a new patient check-in system powered by Agentic AI. The process begins with patient registration and room allocation, followed by the patient completing a digital intake form. Based on the information provided, the system generates personalized recommendations, such as additional blood tests, X-rays, or other diagnostic procedures.”

“It then autonomously schedules these tests and conducts most of them within the same room for efficiency. Test results are made available immediately, along with recommended treatments, including prescribed medications (with guidance on where to obtain them) or referrals for physical therapy. In rare cases, the system escalates the case to a human doctor for further evaluation. Importantly, the AI continuously stores and analyzes patient data to improve future decision-making and learning.”

The Real Concerns About Agentic AI

The doctor was quiet for some time and then said, “Wow! That is scary! It looks like a robot doing everything. How would one trust it? And we should all be concerned, we may no longer be needed.”

Data Quality and Accountability

The nurse paused, her expression turning more serious. “I understand your concern. Honestly, I think it’s more complicated than the conference presenters made it seem. Yes, Agentic AI could handle routine annual checkups and help with our overwhelming workload. But will it really keep us in the loop for complex cases, or will cost-cutting pressures gradually expand what is considered ‘routine’?”

“My bigger concern, though, is about data quality and accountability. For example, if the AI misreads a patient’s blood type due to a smudged label and uses that error to train itself, it might start ‘learning’ that certain symptoms correlate with the wrong blood type. Suddenly, you have a system confidently making dangerous recommendations to dozens of patients based on one initial mistake that nobody caught.”

“Who catches those errors? Who is responsible when something goes wrong? How do we rectify incorrect data that may be spreading like wildfire into various systems? We need rigorous oversight, how to undo incorrect data, and not just trust that the system will self-correct.”

AI-Generated Knowledge vs. Scientific Evidence

She continued, “And there is this fundamental question: what counts as valid medical knowledge? Lab-tested, peer-reviewed evidence is one thing. But AI-generated correlations based on goal-oriented optimization? That is different. For example, the recent Agentic AI – Autonomous Drug Discovery aims to reduce the 10-year drug development cycle to under 3 years. It is very concerning. We cannot let speed and efficiency override the much-proven scientific method. What if the AI optimizes for ‘reducing development time’ and finds that skipping certain long-term toxicity tests still produces drugs that pass initial trials? It has achieved its goal, but we won’t know about the damage until years after approval.”

The doctor nodded slowly. “So it is not really about whether we will be replaced entirely, but about how we maintain quality and responsibility as these systems take on more tasks.”

“Exactly,” the nurse agreed.

Why Agentic AI Has Become Popular Now

After some time, the nurse said, “I am still intrigued by why Agentic AI has become popular now. As I mentioned, I think humans were just not ready for it.”

Tibi saw through the rearview mirror the nurse waving her hand and continuing, “Self-driving cars are also Agentic AI and have been here for some time. Now, Agentic AI is expanding from such products to corporate environments. The next big shift would likely be more personal, autonomous AI assistants that could handle tasks like managing schedules and finances, or even representing us in certain interactions. Imagine a clone of me doing everything! On one hand, that is exciting – I could go on more vacations. On the other hand, it leads to an unthinkable future and more questions than answers on what the future will look like.”

They both fell silent after that, deep in thought. Tibi was at last feeling better and, in fact, happy after hearing this conversation. He turned on some light music, and the ride became much smoother.

Tibi was nearing their destination, and the nurse said, “The ride started jerky and then turned pleasant with music. A small comparison with the buzz Agentic AI is creating. It is going to be a jerky ride, much more jerky than this, and some may turn out to be pleasant. Maybe this car was listening to our conversation and reacting to it. So, what’s new about Agentic AI?!”

The doctor gave out an uncomfortable laugh and said, “That would be spooky if this self-driving car was listening to us and reacting, especially on how it drives. In that case, I would keep the conversation very pleasant!”

Tibi came to a stop, and they both got out of the car laughing.

The Big Reveal

That made Tibi’s day. You see, Tibi is the self-driving car and was very annoyed that everyone was talking about Agentic AI as a novelty while they were sitting in one. Tibi was glad the nurse recognized it and was on the same page with him about why everyone was talking about it now.

But Tibi thought the Agentic AI at the hospital seemed to have a different level of complexity, with a variety of interactions with humans and various other medical devices. The stakes felt different, too.

Tibi remembered last month when a software update had incorrectly flagged a bike lane as a ‘parking zone.’ For three days, he and other cars had been routing through it until a human noticed. Similar mistakes in Medical Agentic AI could systematically harm patients in ways that might not be immediately obvious.

Tibi thought this had been a great day for learning, though the day had started with annoyance. His musings were interrupted by an orange flash light on the cab dash. This was his first warning for his reckless driving.

Anyway, Tibi was glad the day was over, parked in his usual space, and started to recharge, looking forward to riding with humans and listening to their novelty and the various buzzwords they use for slightly different things.

Moral of the Story

Perhaps the real innovation isn’t in the technology itself. It is in our willingness to finally see it. Humans have always been more excited by the act of naming and announcing than by quiet, gradual progress. We need the buzzword, the conference, the collective conversation: not because the capability is new, but because these rituals mark our readiness to accept what has been possible all along.
