Human Expansion and Wildlife Habitat
Humans are natural explorers, and occupying lands has been one of the key means by which they sustain and grow. While there is governance in place to protect certain areas, such as forests and other natural habitats, from human settlement, the growing population and uneven wealth continue to place immense pressure on animal habitats, increasing the human impact on wildlife across ecosystems. As human expansion encroaches further into these protected spaces, animals are forced to confront the loss of their homes, a growing reality of animals losing natural habitat in today’s world.
The story here is told from their (animals’) perspectives, exploring how they respond to this threat and fight back with intelligence and resilience.
Playdate
Coral, the crab, dug her claws deep into the wet sand as a powerful wave nearly swept her away from the shore. She gripped the ground tightly, bracing against the surging water, her tiny legs trembling. The waves were relentless, stronger that day, and Coral quickly realized why. It was a full moon. The high tides always followed the moon’s pull, and that day, it felt like the ocean was testing her.
She was on her way to meet her friends. It was supposed to be a simple playdate, though their playdates had taken on a more serious tone lately. Her mom usually accompanied her on such excursions, making sure she was safe along the shoreline. But with her baby brothers needing attention, Coral had begged to go alone.
“I will be careful!” she had promised, eager not to miss out on her playtime. Now, as the waves battered the shore, she was starting to regret her impatience. Still, she moved slowly, determined to meet her friends and complete the important task they had been working on for weeks.
The $10 Million Sign
After what felt like an eternity battling the waves, Coral finally reached a remote part of the beach where her friends were gathered. She spotted them waving at her, their small figures clustered near a large rock that served as their meeting point. But before she could reach them, something else caught her attention: A towering sign planted firmly in the sand.
Waterfront Property For Sale! Prime Location! $10,000,000!
Coral stopped in her tracks, staring at the sign. She could not believe her eyes. Ten million dollars for this remote piece of the beach? It made no sense to her. She had always understood that high property prices were reserved for bustling, crowded areas.
The beachfront apartments she had seen near the city, packed with humans and noisy traffic, were prime examples of where land should be expensive. But here? In this isolated, tranquil spot, far away from the city? Why would humans want to pay so much to be here?
Her curiosity increased, Coral hurried over to join her friends. She could see they had noticed the sign too, murmuring among themselves about its strange appearance.
Understanding Human Real Estate Logic
“Coral! You made it!” her friend Sandy exclaimed, waving her claw excitedly.
“Barely,” Coral huffed, shaking some of the wet sand off her legs. “The waves almost swept me away.”
“Yeah, the tide’s crazy today,” said another crab, Marina, glancing out at the wild surf. “But did you guys see that sign? Ten million dollars! What are humans thinking?”
“That is exactly what I was wondering,” Coral replied, eyeing the sign again. “I mean, why would they want to pay so much for a place like this? It is so quiet, so… deserted.”
“Well,” Sandy chimed in thoughtfully, “maybe that is exactly why they want it.”
“What do you mean?” asked Coral.
“Think about it,” Sandy continued, tapping her claws against the sand in a rhythmic pattern. “Humans get tired of all the noise and crowding in the cities. Some of them yearn for quiet, peaceful places. The more remote and untouched a place is, the more they seem to value it, even when it contributes to habitat loss due to urbanization.”
Why Remote Beach Property Costs More
“Urbanization is a mouthful of a word! But why should a place be worth more just because fewer people are around?” Coral asked, confused. “Shouldn’t prices go up when more people want to live in a place?”
Marina shook his head.
“Humans are strange that way. They believe something becomes more special if it is not accessible to everyone.”
“When a place is remote, private, or exclusive, it is suddenly seen as a luxury. Then, more people start buying, and the price stabilizes. But as it gets crowded, competition increases, and the price rises again!”
Coral considered this for a moment. It did make a strange kind of sense. The more humans wanted to escape the crowds, the more they would value a place where they could be alone. But she could not shake the feeling that this trend, driven by human desires, added to the growing human impact on wildlife.
Especially with humans occupying more places, becoming authoritative, not only driving the animals away, but at some point making it a human-elusive dwelling. And then, create havoc when they see an animal around as if it did not belong there.

The Threat
“That is what has got me worried,” Coral said after a moment. “If humans start buying up all the remote places, where does that leave us? Our project was supposed to find spots where we could build our community, away from all the hustle and bustle. But if humans are now eyeing these areas too, we might not be safe here for long, just like many animals losing natural habitat across the world.”
Sandy and Marina exchanged worried looks. Their community of crabs had been trying to find a safe, undisturbed place to settle for months now. The more humans expanded their towns and cities, the more difficult it had become for the crabs to stay hidden and protected. This part of the beach seemed like the perfect spot. It was quiet, far from human activity, and safe for them to live in peace. But if the humans started moving in, that would all change.
“We’ve got to do something,” Marina said, his voice firm. “We can not let humans drive up the value of every quiet, remote place on the coast. If they start building here, we will lose our chance of a safe home.”
“But what can we do?” Sandy asked, her voice filled with uncertainty. “We are just crabs. We cannot stop humans from buying land.”
Coral’s Clever Plan
“Maybe we cannot stop them from buying land,” Coral said, “but we can make them not want it.”
“How?” Marina asked, his eyes wide with curiosity.
“Humans are crazy about water views, right?” Coral began, her tone becoming more confident as her plan took shape. “They want to live by the water, where it is quiet and peaceful. But what if we make this spot a little less peaceful and less appealing?”
Sandy’s eyes lit up with understanding. “You mean… make some noise? Cause a little chaos?”
“Exactly!” Coral replied with a grin. “We crabs aren’t the only creatures on this beach. If we can rally the seagulls, the fish, the turtles, and maybe even the seals, we could turn this quiet spot into the noisiest, busiest part of the coast, shifting the balance of human wildlife conflict in our favor.”
Marina’s face broke into a wide smile. “And if it is noisy and full of activity, the humans will lose interest! They will think it is just like the crowded city they are trying to escape!”
The Jellyfish Solution
Coral added, “Keeping it noisy is a good temporary solution. But we cannot create noise all the time. How about we ask our friends, the jellyfish, to settle down closer to the shallow water of this beach? Humans are really afraid of their stings, and they may not find the water safe for swimming.”
Marina’s eyes widened as the idea clicked into place. “Jellyfish? That is genius! No human would dare swim here if they thought jellyfish were waiting to sting them. They are terrified of jellyfish!”
Sandy nodded in agreement. “Exactly. It will not just be the noise; it will be about making the whole area feel risky and unsafe. Jellyfish drifting near the shore would make humans think twice about buying this place.”
Coral smiled, but her mind was already on the next challenge. “But convincing the jellyfish will not be easy. They usually stay out in deeper waters, and they are not exactly the friendliest creatures.”
“Well, we can at least ask,” Sandy said. “Maybe they will be willing to help if it means keeping their waters peaceful too.”
Negotiating with the Jellyfish
With that, the three friends went quickly down the beach to the water’s edge. Coral hesitated for a moment, staring into the dark, rolling waves where the jellyfish lived. She knew they were elusive and mysterious creatures. They were not ones to be easily swayed by others’ concerns. But this was important. They had to try.
“Here goes nothing,” Coral muttered, dipping her claws into the surf and sending out a ripple that was their signal to the jellyfish.
Coral, Sandy, and Marina exchanged nervous glances, wondering if their message had been ignored. Then, from beneath the waves, a shimmering, translucent shape appeared, followed by another, and another. Soon, a group of jellyfish had gathered in the shallow water, their ghostly forms glowing faintly in the moonlight.
One of the larger jellyfish, its long tentacles swaying gently with the current, drifted closer to the shore. Coral swallowed hard and stepped forward.

Making Their Case
“Um, hi,” she began, trying to keep her voice steady. “We need your help. The humans… They plan to buy this stretch of the beach, and if they do, they will ruin it for all of us. We need to make the area less appealing to them, and, well, we were hoping you could help us by moving closer to the shore. Your presence might scare them away.”
The jellyfish hovered silently for a moment, its dark, unblinking form giving no indication of what it was thinking. Coral felt a shiver run down her spine. What if they refused?
Finally, the jellyfish’s voice emerged in a soft, echoing whisper. “Why should we help you, little crab? We have no interest in humans, nor in your struggles. Our kind prefers the deeper waters, far from the chaos of the shore.”
Coral took a deep breath. “I understand,” she said slowly. “But if the humans buy this beach, they will eventually move into your waters too. They will not stop until they’ve claimed every part of the ocean they can reach.”
“If we do not stop them here, they will disturb your peace just as much as ours.”
An Unlikely Alliance
The jellyfish drifted back slightly, as if considering Coral’s words. The other jellyfish remained still, their long tentacles trailing lazily through the water. After what felt like an eternity, the large jellyfish moved closer again.
“Very well,” it said in a soft, floating voice. “Some of us will move closer to the shore and take turns. But know this, we do not favor shallow waters. If your plan fails, we will not stay.”
Coral nodded quickly, relief flooding through her. “Thank you! We’ll make sure it works, I promise.”
With that, the jellyfish began their slow, graceful glide toward the shallows, their translucent bodies glowing faintly as they spread out across the area. Their long, stinging tentacles dangled dangerously close to the surface, making the water shimmer.
Victory!
As Coral watched the jellyfish settle in, she felt a surge of hope. Their eerie, silent presence along the shoreline made the water unwelcoming, even dangerous. For the first time, it seemed impossible that humans would want to build here.
So, it proved to be the perfect plan!
Coral and her friends quickly set to work, rallying all the beach’s creatures to join their cause. The seagulls made noisy sounds, the fish splashed in the shallow waters, and the seals barked playfully as they joined the commotion. Soon, the once quiet, remote part of the beach became a lively, bustling hub of activity.
As the humans reconsidered their expensive investment in the noisy, dangerous waterfront, Coral and her friends celebrated. Their plan had worked. Together, they had preserved their community’s future by responding intelligently to the growing human impact on wildlife.
A Beach That Belongs to Everyone
Coral understood why humans craved these water views. For the tranquility and the connection to nature. But she also knew that the beauty of such places belonged to everyone, and she was determined to keep her corner of the beach safe for all its inhabitants.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, Coral felt proud. The beach was still theirs and not owned, not priced, but shared.
