Digital Wilderness: A Nature and Technology Story

Digital Wilderness: A Nature and Technology Story

Nature as the Original Network

Long before humans could even think of the internet, nature had already created the most sophisticated network in the world. It does so by remembering and navigating difficult paths externally, by intuitively recognising dangers and combating them with techniques such as camouflage, and by building a community for safety and pleasure. And the list goes on.

When humans invented computers and the internet to connect them, we were not creating intelligence out of nothing. We were only discovering patterns in the natural world and translating them into digital form.

The internet became humanity’s attempt to mirror what nature had perfected: a living system of memory, communication, and shared knowledge. Nothing new.

Join me in this story and game as I explore humanity’s deep connection with nature.

Early Internet Dreams

The hum of a dial-up connection echoed in Emma’s memory, like the distant call of an old friend. Sitting by her window, she watched the golden autumn leaves flutter in the crisp wind.  Emma could not help but feel a deep sense of nostalgia.

There was something sentimental about the early days of the internet. It was a time when the world was learning to connect in ways that felt exciting and new. It was much like the quiet, instinctive connections found in nature. Back then, the digital wilderness felt vast and unexplored, full of possibility.

As a child, Emma had always been captivated by animals. She marveled at how birds could sense the coming of a storm, and how elephants, with their extraordinary memories, could travel vast distances without losing their way. Nature had an intelligence that seemed almost magical to her back then.

As she grew older, she realized that the internet, in its own way, was humanity’s attempt to replicate this intelligence. A system built to store memory, recognize patterns, and share knowledge, bringing the vast wisdom of the natural world into the palms of their hands.

A Message

Tonight, the usual calm of her room was interrupted by an unfamiliar ping from her laptop. A notification from a long-forgotten corner of the web. Emma squinted at the screen. It was a message from “The Wilderness,” an old forum she and a few childhood friends had once frequented. They had used it to explore a fantasy they had created about a “living internet,” where the digital and natural worlds collided. But that was years ago, and the forum had long since gone dormant.

Curiosity got the best of her. She clicked on the message.

“It’s time. Join the adventure.”

The cryptic message appeared beneath a misty jungle landscape, an image that stirred something deep inside her. Could someone still have kept the forum they once imagined so many years ago? A sense of excitement flickered in her chest.

Entering the Virtual Wilderness

She verified the authenticity of the link and clicked the link with the knowledge that her computer was protected. Her screen flickered and went dark for a moment before revealing a lush, virtual wilderness. It was just as she remembered it. A digital world that mirrored the intricacies of nature, with every detail lovingly crafted to replicate the intelligence of animals. Her avatar, a figure she hadn’t seen in years, stood at the edge of a jungle so dense it seemed alive.

A map materialized in her avatar’s hand, its edges worn like an old treasure map. Emma smiled as the map glowed with soft golden marks indicating her objectives. The first task:

“Find the elephant herd.”

Following the Elephants

She guided her avatar forward, deeper into the jungle. The digital trees swayed in the simulated wind, and birds singing echoed in the distance. Each step she took was a reminder of the wonders of nature that had once captivated her. The jungle was alive with details, just like the internet itself, brimming with knowledge, connections, and possibilities. And like nature, it held risks as well as beauty.

Navigating the Digital Storm

Suddenly, a digital thunder cracked overhead, and the skies darkened. A storm was brewing, coded to behave exactly like its real-world counterpart. Emma quickened her pace, pressing forward as the storm rolled in, winds howling and branches cracking under the force of the digital rain. She had to think fast. In the real world, animals did not panic; they adapted.

Her memory of elephants’ uncanny ability to sense incoming storms guided her. She followed her instinct, maneuvering through the jungle in search of higher ground.

She pushed her avatar forward until the trees parted, revealing a vast, grassy plain. In the distance, she could see the silhouettes of elephants, their massive forms cutting through the stormy haze. They moved with purpose, traveling in a line, just as they would in the real world, guided by memory, knowing the land in a way no human ever could.

Communicating with Dolphins

Emma felt a thrill of accomplishment as she reached the herd. But the adventure was far from over. A new task appeared on her map:

“Communicate with the dolphins.”

The transition from jungle to ocean was smooth as the landscape shifted beneath her avatar’s feet. She found herself standing on a digital shore, where the ocean stretched out before her, vast and blue. The waves rolled gently against the sand, but something glittered beneath the surface. A group of dolphins, their sleek bodies gliding just under the water’s surface.

Decoding the Dolphin Language

In real life, dolphins communicated through a complex system of clicks and whistles, and Emma knew this was the key to her next challenge. She listened closely to the dolphins’ sounds, and slowly the clicks began to form a pattern. Not noise, but information. It was a code. Each whistle and click was a clue, leading her deeper into the adventure. Using her knowledge of how dolphins navigated and communicated, she deciphered the code and unlocked the next stage of the game.

The Underwater Labyrinth

As her avatar swam alongside the dolphins, the digital ocean gave way to an underwater labyrinth, a maze of coral reefs and sunken ships. Emma knew the dolphins use echolocation to navigate these environments, so she followed their lead, using their clicks to find her way through the maze. The ocean was alive with digital life, fish darting between coral and sharks prowling in the distance, but the dolphins stayed close, guiding her through the dangers until she reached the heart of the labyrinth.

There, nestled among the coral, was a glowing treasure chest. Emma opened it to find a new item, a tool – a problem-solving instrument she would need for the final challenge.

The Crow’s Intelligence

The final mark on the map led her back to the jungle, to a towering tree that reached up to the virtual sky. At its top was a nest filled with glowing eggs, guarded by a hawk. But there was more to this than a simple climb.

Emma knew that crows, among nature’s most intelligent creatures, often used tools to solve complex problems, and this was her cue to think differently. She had to think like the crows, using the tool she had just acquired to navigate the challenges ahead.

Solving Nature’s Puzzles

The tree was filled with puzzles, vines that blocked her path, and branches too weak to climb. But with the crow-like cleverness, she solved each one, using the tool to clear obstacles and reach the top. When she finally stood at the peak, overlooking the vast digital wilderness she had explored, the hawk bowed its head, and a message appeared on the screen:

“Nature and the Internet are not separate. They are connected systems. Just as animals nurture the earth, so must we nurture the web, for in its roots lies the intelligence of the world.”

Lessons from the Digital Wilderness

The screen flickered, and the virtual world faded away. Emma was back in her quiet room, the hum of her laptop the only sound.

But something had changed. The adventure had been more than just a game. It was a reminder that the internet, like the natural world, was a living system that needed care. The intelligence humanity had poured into the digital space was inspired by nature’s own intelligence, from elephants’ memory to dolphins’ communication.

The internet, like nature, was a place of connection, learning, and growth. People had the tremendous advantage of having both the internet and nature to be part of their world. They both held the same beauty and complexity with a key difference.

The difference was responsibility. Nature has its own intelligence and has the possibility of correcting itself, taking care of itself. The digital world depended entirely on human intelligence and choices.

Returning to the Real Wilderness

Emma closed her laptop and looked out the window. In the yard below, a crow hopped along the fence, tugging at something wedged between the slats. This was problem-solving, just like in the game. She watched it work, patient and methodical, until it freed its prize.

The bird tilted its head, as if acknowledging her, then flew off into the darkening sky.

Emma pulled on her jacket. The hiking trail near her house would still have enough light for an hour or so. Her phone buzzed with notifications, but she ignored it. Tonight, she wanted to walk among real trees.

Moral of the Story

Though there is a distinction between discovery and invention, the two often overlap, with discovery typically leading the way. Most inventions are grounded in some prior discoveries, something that already existed and was newly understood. While we can be proud of groundbreaking inventions like the Internet, we have a responsibility to nurture not only nature but also the Internet, because both require care for our collective well-being.

Indeed with each invention comes a new responsibility. The responsibility to care, which seldom gets attention during the initial phase of invention.
